About Us
Since 1964
Our History
Burry’s Pharmacy, originally owned by James Albert Burry Sr.“Jim”, opened its doors on June 8, 1964.
Jim graduated from the University of Florida in 1957 and spent the first few years of his pharmacy career working for Touchton Drugs in Lakeland, Florida. In the spring of 1961 Jim moved to Leesburg with his wife Gail and accepted a position at Hewitt Drugs.
Wanting to become the owner of an independent neighborhood pharmacy, Jim took advantage of an opportunity to purchase an existing sundry shop and soda fountain on North Boulevard. The pharmacy opened on June 8, 1964 and quickly became a local gathering place for a soda and a sandwich or for patients picking up medications. In Leesburg Jim and Gail raised their two children, Jimmy and Lou Ann, had successful careers in pharmacy and teaching, both becoming active members of the local community through their various involvements.
Jim moved the pharmacy to its current location at 500 Webster Street in 1985, removing the soda fountain but adding a drive thru and focusing on pharmacy services. In December of 1994, Jimmy graduated from pharmacy school and returned to Leesburg to work the family pharmacy, later purchasing the pharmacy in January 2002. Jimmy’s son Trey joined the team as a pharmacist in July of 2019.
